Thirty Thousand Men: Steve Forbert

Steve Forbert is best known for his song Romeo's Tune. He moved to New York from his native Mississippi in 1976 and busked Grand Central Station from whence came a record deal. His debut LP was Alive on Arrival in the mid-70's. He has had some low points in his career and has bounced around a few recording labels.

This song is from Young Guitar Days, a collection of outtakes from his early work, music recorded before 1981.

You know how much I like Steve Forbert, so I'm really excited to hear something I never knew existed. As is the case with so many others, I believe his earliest work is still his best work (why is that so common?) and this seems to back up that contention. Thanks for putting this pretty music in my ears!

Remind me to send you a couple of things I recently found.

im6,
I do know how much you like Steve Forbert, but I didn't know this would be new do you. That makes me glad I posted it.

I will have to scout out this album. I cannot fathom how the record execs haven't figured out that the over-45's love music, have an ear for both melody and lyrics, enjoy a folk or sensible rock sound (again, with melody), and ARE THE ONES WITH ALL THE DAMNED MONEY TO BUY THE PRODUCT! Forbert is a prime example of an artist who should be marketed heavily, rather than having to struggle for a record label. Nice post.

Dan,
It is so frustrating when I go into a store and find few CD's I recognize. Steve Forbert would have to sing hip hop to get playing time on many stations.
