I had completely forgotten this song! When I hear it, it reminds me of how Leon and Joe Cocker could have been such close associates. They both have that "drunken soul" in their voices. This song reminds me of Anna, a girl who I had a huge crush on at the time. She had legs all the way up to her bottom, and blonde hair that stretched all the way to her bottom. But there's a punchline here. Years later, I found out that Anna had made her living as a stripper. When I knew her, she was cute, innocent Anna. Thanks for the memory. I bet it would be very scary to see Anna today!
Dan, Now that you've mentioned Joe Cocker I can really hear how similar their voices are, at least on this song. Love the story of Anna. Nice to know those legs didn't go to waste. She probably lives in suburbia with her doctor husband, 2.4 children and the dog, a Golden Retriever.
Apropos of Leon, have you discovered his country-twin, Hank Wilson? "Hank Wilson's Back Vol. I" is classic road-trip music both for my wife and me. The later volumes in the series (Vol. I was released in '73; he didn't get around to Vol. II until eleven years later, Vol. III in 1998 and Vol. IV in 2001) are more uneven. I like Vol. II, feel "mnyeh" about Vol. III and don't really care for Vol. IV. But oh, that first one . . . .
Ralph just sent me your blog connect.I've been traveling backward through your posts.Just had to comment on this one because it took me immediately back to Kumasi Girl's Secondary School 1970.Departing volunteers left me their reel-to-reel tape recorder and promised to send tapes. One of the first to arrive was Leon Russell. We listened over and over.We were hungry for new music from home and wondered who these "new people" were.
Michele, Welcome to Coffee. I'll have to thank Ralph for sending you. Reel to reel, wow! That takes me back a bit.
I had a cassette recorder but no Leon, didn't find him until much later.
My sister had sent a recording off the radio and I too wondered who these singers were. I remember reading the Academy Award list and knowing not one of the movies.

Tibo,
I appreciate the kind words and welcome you to Coffee.
Flickhead,
I hadn't heard. Thanks. I'll post a song tomorrow.

Marchbanks,
I don't know Hank Wilson, but I'll hunt him down to listen. I'm sure I'll like him if he's Leon's country-twin. Thanks.
Hank is Leon, just wearin' a Stetson instead of a stovepipe.
Duh, me!
