I have always been partial to his Tea for the Tillerman from which this song comes. It was released in 1970 which boggles my mind. It doesn't feel that long ago.
Thanks Kat. In 2005 he recorded it with Dolly Parton on the Dolly Parton album Those Were the Days!!!! From Tea for the Tillerman which features the most recorded Cat Steven's song "Father and Son".(some 60 different recordings)
..but can you tell me, where(today) do the children play?
There were houses, there were hoses There were sprinklers on the lawn There was an ironing board And she would stand and made her understand him And ask the children what they'd done at school that day And the yard went on forever
There were blouses with print roses, checkered shirts and white levis There was a frying pan and she would cook their dreams while they were dreaming And later she would send them out to play And the yard went on forever...
and it did go on forever, and maybe we were/are lucky because it did.It expanded our horizons, and gave us a way of looking at the world that is different to today.
sblake, We didn't live in fear, and I so agree that it expanded our horizons. There were few boundaries. The world was so wide and so filled with so much to see and do.

My Dear Berba,
Thank you for bringing Summer Holiday to me!
I jumped the bus and waved to those guys in the tams who kept showing up along side the road.
sblake,
You sent me scurrying to my music files as I knew I had that album. I'd forgotten about this song.
Children no longer play. They are scheduled.
