"Look! Up in the sky!" "It's a bird!" "It's a plane!" "It's Superman!"

I remember crisp October afternoons when the sun shined with the clearest of light. It was long sleeve weather, and darkness came early. We'd play outside until my mother called. Once inside, we'd settle in front of the television to watch our favorite programs.

Today was Circus Day on the Mickey Mouse Club. Mickey was the ringmaster, and the Merry Mouseketeers were circus folk. Even now, I don't ever think of them as just plain Mouseketeers. They were and still are the Merry Mouseketeers. Each late afternoon I sat in front of the television and sang along, "Who's the leader of the club that's made for you and me?" I really did believe it was a club of which I was a member. I knew all the songs of the week and usually sang along. I always dreaded the end, " Now it's time to say goodbye to all our company."

Superman was also an every afternoon event. The opening, "Faster than a speeding bullet, more powerful than a locomotive," still jumps around in my memory. I didn't care that his Clark Kent disguise wasn't all that great. I was a kid, and kids are willing participants and the best suspenders of disbelief. Scoffing comes much later. Lois Lane too was one of my heroes. In her characteristic suit and matching hat, she was willing to take risks for the big story. Granted, Superman had to save her, but that was the perfect fifties plot line: girl gets saved by hero.

I'm sorry - I apologize in advance ... I just had the most intense and confusing visual when I scanned and read 'suspenders of disbelief' ... scary part is, I know EXACTLY what you mean, but that visual of a man with pleated pants being held up by the 'suspenders of disbelief' ... y' got me, Kat ... dat's a good 'un. That would be SUCH a great book title ... keep that in mind for when you finally get around to publishing the 'Coffee' memoirs ...

I don't know a guy who wasn't in serious youthful lust for Annette ... and yeah, I know there were other female Mouseketeers, but we din't pay attention to them - we had already promised our hearts to Annette ... okay, that IS a bit much - we were just hot for her ... she was the reason we hated to see the show end, too ...

You're right about Supe, too - we all thought Lois was the major 'Duh!' of the show not being able to see thru that phoney 'disguise' of his ... but it was okay, 'cuz right after Supe came Guy Madison and then Hoppy ... at night it was Chuck Connors and then the man with the funky bid'ness card: Paladin - 'Have Gun, Will Travel' ... that is STILL the coolest motto ever given life on-screen ... sure beats out 'The name's Bond - JAMES Bond' ...

Great ceasar's ghost, wasn't fridays on MM Club roundup day? I use to like the adventures of "Spin & Marty"
And Got ya cheif, annette was a fine looking gal.Her dance partner it seemed was always Bobbie,(who later in life) use to dance & sing on "The Lawerence Welk Show" just vonderful, vonderful.
Rowdy Yates & the boys on Wagon Train use to have their days as well as the Maverick twins. But Sugarloaf never made it to town to play cards with Paladin, probably because that "Rebel" Yuma, was always sticking his good deeds for everyone else.
But as Grandpa McCoy would remember,Lucas MacCain would always be asked to run for sheriff,
ROFLMAO great memories

There is just one thing to say and see:

The original Jimmy Olsen (the movie one)was played by Tommy Bond who was a star of Our Gang - he played Butch.Jack Larson was the TV Jimmy Olsen and sometime cameo appearences in Superman films!!
Jack is still alive and lives in California.
Phyllis Coates (Lois) is also still alive as well as Noel Neill (her replacement on the series).Coates does not like to mention her Superman role although
Neill has revelled in the fame and cameod in the 1978 Superman film.
John Hamilton (Perry White) died of a heart attack in 1958 and we all know about George Reeves!

Richard,
That's funny because I never had that vision until I read your comment.

I don't know any girls who had reactions to the male Mouseketeers. As for you and every other male and Annette, boys are just pigs!

We just accepted that not recognizing was necessary for the show to work. That was okay with us.

Morpfy,
Yup, Friday was Talent Round-up Day!I liked Spin and Marty as well and the Hardy Boys.

That paragraph was chock full of my entire childhood television experience. Well done, Morpfy!

sblake,
I think remember the movie serial version of Superman. Jack Larson is the only Jimmy I knew. Phyllis Coats was more of a favorite than Noel Neill who was sometimes a bit wimpy.

I remember that cameo. She was in a train, and her daughter saw Superboy fly by the train.

I knew every part of that opening.

Annette had boobs, and that was a real treat. Yup, I'm a pig. Do you remember "Sky King"? I loved that show.

PS:Today is John Lennon's 68th birthday

My mind click and I went back to the Superman—Mickey Mouse Club connection. Superman came on immediately after the Merry Mouseketeers and I didn’t move until it was over.

I made a Superman outfit: a towel for a cape, a paper cutout of the “S” pinned to my shirt, and my underpants outside my jeans. I would lay on the end of the couch at my aunt’s house with my arms stretched out as I flew to save the day.

The Mickey Mouse Club changed a bit in my mind as all of us Mouseketeers grew older and I developed a grand crush on Annette Funicello.

sblake,
It is difficult to think of Lennon as 68. I still see him frozen in time.

Nick,
They were on one after the other here too though I think Superman was first here..

I can just see you in your cape flying to save the day.

You and every other boy!

Au contraire, the "Black Wasp" needed no cape!

Minicapt,
Did the Black Wasp then have wings?

Otay.. 1 TB shoo I liked
"The Little Rascals" or also known as "Our Gang"

Kat said...

Morpfy,
The Little Rascals were on every Saturday, and I didn't miss them!

1. Couldn't afford the costume, thus the necessity of a cape was never considered.
2. The "Black Wasp" was akin to the "Green Lantern", but much improved; if I remember, dropping trees with a Swede saw/double-bitted axe was a skill desired above those in the GL canon.

Cheers

Minicapt,
As I'd not heard of the Black Wasp, I was wondering if he too wore a cape.
Thanks for the Green Lantern comparison as I now know a bit about the Black Wasp!
