In 1972, Lightfoot curtailed his touring schedule after contracting Bell's palsy, a condition that left his face partially paralyzed for a time. Despite his illness, Lightfoot had several major hits during the 1970s. In 1974, his classic single "Sundown" from the album Sundown, went to No.1 on the American and Canadian charts. He performed it twice on NBC's "The Midnight Special" series. A lot of people thought Lightfoot wrote this about his wife. In an April 1975 Crawdaddy magazine article, he explained: "All it is, is a thought about a situation where someone is wondering what his live one is doing at the moment. He doesn't quite know where she is. He's not ready to give up on her, either, and that's about all I got to say about that." Lightfoot most likely wrote this about the stormy relationship with his one time girlfriend Cathy Smith, who was later sentenced for delivering a lethal dose of heroin to John Belushi.

Oh, by the way, Bob Dylan calls Lightfoot one of his favorite songwriters.

sblake,
I didn't know about whom he sang. It never occurred to me to wonder. I guess I sort of figured it was a wife or ex-wife. That old girlfriend threw me. I didn't know she had a connection to Lightfoot.
