We used to buy punks when I was a kid. They were long and thin and brown. They were as close as we ever got to fireworks. We'd light them and then watch as they flamed to the bottom. I think they also kept the bugs away. Starting a couple of days before the 4th, you would start to hear firecrackers all over the neighborhood. You never saw them: they were ground level and noisy. The next town over always had the real things on July 4th.
Hot dogs and hamburgers are as much a part of the 4th as flags and fireworks. You've also got to have potato salad. No self respecting 4th of July barbecue is official without potato salad. My mother told us she used to have salmon and peas on the 4th. It was traditional. I'm glad I wasn't alive back then.
It's the man's job to cook the meat at a barbecue. I have no idea why. Maybe it hearkens back to the days of the first fires. Maybe back then men felt they were obliged to cook what they'd hunted. My dad always sat outside with a drink in one hand and a fork in the other. He was a believer in lots of fuel to get the charcoal going. I loved watching the whoosh of flames when he started his fire. If it wasn't burning fast enough for him, he'd add more fuel. This made him prone to setting himself on fire. If we heard stomping from the backyard, we knew he was trying to put out his shoe. My mother would ask if he was okay, and he always was. Once even his pant leg caught on fire. I think he used his drink to put out the flame. Somehow, despite everything, my dad always cooked meat to perfection.

Oh. Right. 'Punks' ... that one took a minute ... I was thinkin' that today they can be rented for a while, but no, I was wrong ... you meant the OTHER punks ... right. Got that now. I always dreaded coming outside the morning of the 5th 'cuz y' just never knew if one of those 'errant' missiles launched by the 'hoi polloi' decided to leave its mark in your car's paint ...
Dogs, burgers, and potato salad ... all the essentials of a successful Fourth of July picnic / barbecue dinner ... but no sweet pickles in the potato salad ... or anywhere near the condiments table, okay ... ? 'Sweet pickle' is an oxymoron ...
Men cook at the 'cue 'cuz the women don't want to. Simple as that. They don't like their hair and clothes smelling of charcoal and firestarter. I still remember Dad's method for making sure the briquettes stayed lit - he'd get a gallon container with a screw-on lid and place as many briquettes in it as would fit - then he'd fill the container with starter fluid and let 'em soak for a week or so before he needed to use 'em. On THE DAY, he'd take 'em out, arrange 'em in the grill bed, strike one match and, VIOLA!, we had fire - and it never went out ... I, in my turn, used the same trick many times ... ya did good, Dad.
Richard,
I had to laugh as that very thought went through my head. I wondered if people would have any idea what in the heck I was talking about, and I'm glad at least you did.
We use piccalilli here on our hot dogs. I don't do sweet pickles on anything.
My dad would have loved your dad's method of preparing the fire, but then again he'd probably add a bit of charcoal fluid for effect. I can see that fireball now!
I have nothing to comapere with today I´m afraid. We didn´t have a ntional day when I was young, only the swedish flag day. Noone in my family were especially good at bbq, so that almost never happened either. If we for some reason did that what ever we had on was burnt on the outside and cold on the inside :-) But I do remember the enormous fire when starting the bbq :-) :-)
Finally cooler weather has come. The thunderstorm produced some fantastic flashes a couple of miles from me, but it never came any closer than that. The temperature dropped from 91 to 72 in just some minutes. It continued for several hours in to the night. This morning it´s possible to breath again :-)
Now it´s 4th of july here in sweden so Happy Fourth Of July!
Christer.
Christer,
This is a huge day with parades and fireworks. Flags are everywhere. I have my flag banners on the fence and back porch. I'll even wear my flag t-shirt to the barbecue.
I'm so glad you have breathing weather again! That rain does cool down the world.
We decided not to do dogs and burgers this year. We are going with bar b que chicken, shrimp wrapped in bacon, potato salad (YaY), corn on the cob, Ann's super fruit salad made with big chunks of watermelon. I will cook two big apple pies tomorrow for Sunday. We have other guests bringing desserts so it should be fun. Lotsa beer/wine. Tomorrow night we will see the fireworks from the Indian River. It's starting to look like another holiday weekend.
Z& Me,
It all sounds so delicious! I love fruit salad with lots of watermelon. Actually I love watermelon! I've been making a new salad: watermelon with feta cheese, and it's perfect for cooling down on a hot day.
Chicken on the grill is a favorite of mine!
Have a perfect 4th of July. It sounds as if you're there already!
"Bob Day" and barbecue. Sorry I missed this post yesterday.
Bob,
Yup, a day just for you and you missed it! I hope you won't miss the next Bob day!
