Last night we had rain. It was a gentle rain, and I left my bedroom window open so I could hear it as I fell asleep. This morning, I shut my windows. The rain left the day chilly. It's only 62 degrees. Rain is predicted for tomorrow. The paper said to expect a wetter July than usual.
I haven't traveled in a year and a half. My feet are itching to move. I want to see new places and revisit familiar places. I want to wander the narrow streets of an old town and stop to eat at a small restaurant serving only local people and offering a menu I can't read. I want to sit outside at a cafe and drink coffee and watch the world pass by me. I have planned a few trips but only in my imaginings. There's that trip back to Ghana. I dream of being there in 2011 to celebrate fifty years of Peace Corps and fifty years of Peace Corps in Ghana. I can also see myself in Istanbul at the markets haggling for goods. Botswana is on my list, maybe a game park and the falls. I'm thinking Guatemala or El Salvador. I can stumble through a bit of Spanish. I keep saying maybe next year.
No one else in my family has this need. They don't pore over maps of the world or check fares. They don't read travel magazines. They don't plan trips in their imaginations or see themselves worlds away. That makes me the lucky one.

Hows the exchange rate these days? I would love to sail the islands of the Carib but that would take some $$$. Maybe when I retire.
Istanbul is one place i really would like to go to! But I have always wanted to go to the Brazilien rainforest before it´s gone. I´ve never been to London either. Paris yes, several times, but never London. Or Rome! I plan travels a lot, but never goes any more. I always finds a reason why I should stay at home :-) The little country Bhutan is also a place I would like to travel to. But I have my dogs and cats and....
Have a great day!
Christer.
Travel is a thing I undertake (unless there's a reason) reluctantly at best. The preparation, research, and general 'bother' of the details associated with the 'adventure' never seem to outweigh the supposed 'benefits' of travel. I am, by nature, perfectly comfortable where I am. If I were another form of organism, it'd probably be something sessile, like an oyster - I move about as much as they do.
The above having been said, tho', I must admit that I'm going to be traveling to Nashville come the 17th ... it'll be a short trip, but may turn out to be worth it in the long run. And yes, in case there's any rampant speculation as to the 'why, it's for to meet a lady ... obviously there's a 'spark' of some sort there, 'cuz this isn't something I'd do just for the grins. The problem will come in after we meet, 'cuz if we get along in real life half as well as we do in our conversations, we're gonna have to address the next logical question, which is - 'What next?' ... that's what happens when people don't live in the same town (or the same state) ... If it's supposed to happen, we'll find a way to make it work ... I'll keep ya posted on the progress ... I gotta go start deciding what I'm gonna take with me now ...
I don't know about El Salvador and Guatemala but Costa Rica is well worth a trip if you haven't been there already. Seeing the sea turtles nesting in Tortuguero was quite an experience.
Richard,
I have wanted to be a traveler since I was eleven. The planning is fun for me. One trip was eight weeks through South America, and my planning made the whole trip as we did just about everything we hoped.
I'm going to Colorado in October so maybe that will stave off the poangs ubtil I have more money.
I wish you well on your amorous excursion!
Christer,
Finding a pet sitter is also a problem for me. Luckily I have one lined up for my next trio to see my sister.
Yup, Istanbul has long been on my list!
Z&Me,
I never check rates until just before I go. Most time I look for great airfares first and make my decision based on what I find and hope what I find is on my list.
Chris,
Luckily I have been to Costa Rica and wouldn't mind going back ti see more. I have also been to Panama and gone through the Miraflores Lock. I'm trying to go, for the most part, where I've never been before.
To boldly go ...
Exactly, Scott!

Minicapt,
I love trains, and I love sleeping on trains. In Ghana I was on a night train and had gone all out (cheap back then) for a first class compartment. I woke up after being jolted from bed: the train had derailed. I've slept in couchettes with three bunks on each side, on cheap seats with my head lolling and in small compartments.
Thanks for this as I hadn't thought about a train trip. That's excitement for me!
