This morning I sat on my deck with a fire going in the chiminea to keep me warm. My yard was filled with the sweet smell of the burning pinion wood. I read my papers, drank my coffee and watched Gracie try to catch a critter in the wood pile.
Last night we had s'mores by the fire pit. We wore socks and sweatshirts to ward off the chill. It felt more like September than July. The temperature was in the 50's. I'm thinking summer really hasn't settled yet. She drops in for a bit then heads south. The paper says 70's tomorrow. I have my fingers crossed.
My friends and I celebrate holidays and special days together. We welcomed dawn on the first day of spring, burned sparklers for Chinese New Year, ate king's cake at the Mardi Gras fete, had corn beef on St. Patrick's Day, hot dogs and burgers on July 4th, and on Thanksgiving, Christmas and Easter we combined and enjoyed each others' family traditions and holiday foods. Tuesday we're celebrating Bastille Day. We don't really need excuses to get together; we do it all the time, but the special events are fun. We get to try new foods, listen to unfamiliar music and learn the customs of the day. I haven't yet figured out to commemorate Tuesday's storming, but I'll figure a way.
I worked fifty or more hours a week, went to bed early and got up every day at 5:15. I was at work before 6:30. Saturday night was about the only day I played. So, when I was about to retire, I wondered what to do with all the time I'd have on my hands. I shouldn't have worried. I don't fill all the time nor do I feel guilty about the down time. Every night is now a Saturday night, and I get to play whenever I want. I'm loving life.

Today is ... bright, sunny, warmer than I'd prefer, and the sky has NO clouds ... even the 'garden' is bare (and no, NOT in a good way) today ...
That said, I'm off to see the Wizard over at Farmer's Market and pick up some Bradley heirloom tomatoes while I'm there - then a stop at Wal-Mart to get what I need to make a pot roast ... haven't had that in a long time. Oven bags are so great for making those ...
One thing I've never understood is the preoccupation certain people have with wanting to fill every second of every moment of every hour of every day with mindless displacement activity(-ies) ... they're not happy unless they're busy so they can't remember what it is they don't like about relaxing and having NOTHING to do. I like nothing to do. I do NOT live for 'make-work'.
After we were purchased by FedEx, we quickly noticed that working conditions and morale all went rapidly into the crapper. It got to the point that I told my coworkers I was ready to be back home before I ever left the house in the morning.
It was, therefore, not a matter that caused me great consternation when FedEx outsourced (nice word, huh?) my position to some Hajji in India - this, I might point out, came right after Hurricane Katrina. The minute the ink was applied to the final paperwork, I felt as if the weight of the world had been removed from my shoulders.
I think the only difference between us, Kat, is that I never wondered in the least what I was gonna do with all the time now at my disposal ... I just knew every day from then on was Saturday - and that made everything all right ...
Wonderful piece about your life, Kat. You are so lucky to have friends like this. You all know how to appreciate and celebrate life.
The weather there sounds about the same as it is here, right now. We're hoping it at least keeps dry for tomorrow's promenade theatre, in the cemetery:

I have another 5 years, at least, of getting up at 5:30, before life becomes a month of Saturdays. But what I really want to know, Kat, is what are: s'mores ?
Rather cold over here today too, barly over 50 and i´ve had a fire in the stove. Not so much because it was cold as to dry the air in my cottage, it has been raining all night and most of the day here. neither I nor my dogs wanted to take a walk in the rain, so I couldn´t get my morning paper until late noon :-)
I seldom plan my days, I take them as they come and I don´t think I´ll ever wonder about what to do with all time I´ll get when retiering. But it´s a long time until then, at least twenty more years if I´m not lucky in a lottery :-)
I usually celebrate holidays at close friends too. I think I´ll have to introduce Bastille day to them, that sounded like a great idea :-)
Have a great day now!
Christer.
Things are rosy for you in S Dennis . . . well except the weather. But think of it this way, I just lost a three day game of Monopoly to a ten year old. It can't get any worse than that.
This shows the kind of happy that is important to me too. A quiet, safe, satisfying routine with surprises aplenty but a routine nonetheless.
Yippeee for you! What more could one ask for? One is truly blessed when she nows how rich she truly is! Well deserved, dear Kat, well desreved!

Richard,
It was a bit chilly today even though we had sun all day. I sat on the deck in the sun, even fell asleep for a bit then that cool wind blew so I came inside.
I was a sloth today and did almost nothing except the usual bed making and showering.
It was an early retirement incentive which got me up and out, and I am so very glad I chose it!
Christer,
It was very cold in the house when I wore up this morning, but I just won't use heat in July. It goes against all that summer stands for to me. Instead, I put on a warm sweatshirt!
I seem to be very busy all summer, and I miss those do anything I want days. Today I took one and will forego my play tonight as I just want to stay in.
I love our holiday celebrations!
Nan,
It's true that we do know how to celebrate and have fun. We get together and watch baseball, play board games and have lots of laughs. My friends live three houses down so getting together is easy!
Z&Me,
it could have been a four day game of Monopoly, the most boring game in the world!
Cuidado,
I do like my routines. They keep my life in balance. I know a piece of every day but still leave time for those surprises.
Jim,
I so wish I could share that event with you. it sounds wonderful. I am a loved of old cemeteries and wander around checking out the headstones. The Cape has some of the oldest stones in the stare. I did do haunted cemetery tour last October, and it was really fun and interesting.
I hope the rain stays away!
Thank you, Gretchen
I think I have known for a long while how lucky I am and how my life has been amazing and fun and filled with adventure.
Jim,
I forget to tell you about s'mores.
You can do one in the oven, but I think a fire is essential to a perfect s'more. Get one graham cracker square ready on a plate, put a section of a Hershey (or Cadbury) chocolate bar on it. Put a marshmallow on a stick and hold it over the fire until the marshmallow browns and softens. Immediately put that marshmallow on the chocolate to soften the chocolate then cover both of them with another square of graham cracker. Voila!
